Surcharge certain credit cards

A surcharge is an extra fee added to the price of a purchase when the customer pays with a credit card instead of cash. The surcharge is typically a percentage of the purchase amount and usually ranges from 1% to 4%.

  • Allowed only on corporate/company cards and cards issued outside of Europe.

  • PSD2 (Revised Payment Services Directive, Directive (EU) 2015/2366) prohibits surcharging private cards within the EU since January 2018.

  • Apple Pay cannot be surcharged because only the last 4 card digits are available — not enough to determine card type.

Step 1: Go to Acquirer Fee Configuration

In the Frisbii sidebar navigation, go to: Configurations → Checkout management → Acquirer fee configuration

Step 2: Select the agreement

Choose the agreement where you want the surcharge(s) to apply.

Step 3: Create a surcharge rule

  1. Click New or click on the column where the surcharge should apply.

  2. Define the scope:

    • Use country codes to specify countries.

    • If you use EU, the surcharge will apply to all EU countries.

    • If you leave the field Countries blank, the surcharge applies to all countries.

Example setup:

  • Base fee: 0 (of the order currency).

  • Percentage fee: 2% of the total order.

  • Minimum fee: 1 (of the order currency).

  • Maximum fee: 10 (of the order currency).

Step 4: Save the surcharge

Click Save to confirm.

Step 5: Understand surcharge hierarchy

If multiple surcharges are added, they form a hierarchy:

  1. Rule #1 is tried first.

  2. If it doesn’t apply, Rule #2 is tried next, and so on.

Use the arrow controls to move a surcharge rule up or down in the hierarchy.

⚠️ If hierarchy is not managed carefully, rules may not apply as expected. Always test after changes.

Result

The surcharge will now be visible at the top of the list in Acquirer Fee Configuration.

In Frisbii Checkout, the surcharge will appear on applicable cards.

For example, here it is shown with a test China Union Pay card.

👉 You can find all testing cards here: Frisbii test cards.

To reproduce this test:

  1. Enable China Union Pay in your test acquirer agreement.

  2. Configure a surcharge for it under Acquirer Fee Configuration.
