Klarna

Overview

Klarna is a payment service that lets customers choose how they pay: at once, later, or in installments. In Frisbii Media, Klarna is available via the Stripe integration and can be offered at checkout for both single items and subscriptions.

→ For general information about Klarna payments, see: Pay with Klarna

Payment Options Offered by Klarna

Klarna offers three payment options you can make available to your customers:

Option

How it works

When to use it

Pay Now

The customer pays immediately upon completing the purchase.

For recurring payments (subscriptions)

Pay Later

Customer pays after receiving the product or service

If customers prefer to pay after receiving content or services.

Pay in Installments

Payment split into smaller amounts over time

Make higher-priced subscriptions more accessible and drive growth.

Financing

Long-term financing up to 36 months (subject to credit approval)

Support larger one-time purchases; Not all customers are approved for the maximum amount, and approval is subject to credit worthiness

Limitations

Klarna decides whether customers can use Klarna for purchases and holds the sole right to receive payments from Klarna customers. Stripe acquires these purchases on your behalf and settles the funds with you.

For subscriptions, the initial invoice may be payable via installment payment, with future subscription renewals then processed via Pay Now.

Before you begin

  • You have an active Stripe account via Stripe Connect. If you haven't set up Stripe yet, start with the Stripe setup guide.

  • You have admin access to the Frisbii Media Merchant Backend (stage and live)

Note

We always recommend setting up and testing in the stage environment first, before doing the same in the live environment.

Step 1: Set up staging for testing

  1. Log in to the stage Merchant Backend.

  2. Log in to your Stripe account and make sure you open it in test mode, so the Frisbii Media stage environment is set up with the Stripe test environment first.

Step 2: Activate Klarna in Stripe

  1. Settings → Payments
Open the payment methods section in the Stripe Dashboard.

  2. Payment methods
In the Payment methods tab, activate Klarna in the list of available payment methods.

When activation is successful, Klarna appears in Stripe with the status Active.

Step 3: Activate Klarna in the Merchant Backend

  1. Settings → Financial → Payment Methods: Open the payment methods overview in the Merchant Backend.

  2. Edit: On the Payment transactions tab, activate Klarna by ticking the checkboxes for single items and/or subscriptions, and select the countries where you want to allow the payment method.

  3. Save the setting so Klarna is listed as an available payment method in the Merchant Backend.

When activation is successful, Klarna is shown as active in the list of payment methods.

Step 4: Activate Klarna in the checkout editor

To display Klarna in your checkout, add it as a payment method to a checkout component.

  1. In the client, navigate to Settings Applications Checkout.

  2. In the Components Payments, create a new payments component containing Klarna.

  3. Add the new payment component to an existing checkout variant.

  1. In the client, navigate to Settings Applications Checkout.

  2. In the Components Payments, edit an existing payments component and add Klarna.

The component is automatically updated in the checkout variant.

Step 5: Test

  1. Run a test checkout: Complete a test purchase using Klarna as the payment method in the stage environment.

  2. Check the payment status: Verify in both the Stripe Dashboard and the Merchant Backend that the test payment is correctly marked as successful.

    1. In Stripe, go to Transactions → Payments.

    2. In Frisbii Media Merchant Backend, go to Log Center → Transactions.

Step 6: Go live

  1. Activate live mode in Stripe: Switch your Stripe account from test mode to live mode and follow Step 2.

  2. Live environment in the Merchant Backend: Repeat the steps from Step 3 and Step 4 in your live environment, since settings from the stage environment aren't carried over automatically.

  3. Verify a live payment: After switching, process a first real Klarna payment to confirm the live configuration.

When the live setup is complete, customers can select Klarna as a payment method in the live checkout.
