Overview

Frisbii Pay supports more than 50 payment methods — from global card networks and digital wallets to local bank transfers and Buy Now Pay Later solutions.

This article helps you:

What do I need to activate a payment method?

Frisbii provides the payment infrastructure and checkout, but the actual processing of payments is handled by external providers. Depending on which payment methods you want to offer, you need to sign a contract with the relevant provider and link it to your Frisbii account.

Frisbii Pay distinguishes between:

  • An “acquirer agreement” with a so-called acquirer, who processes credit card payments

  • The payment service provider PPRO, through which a large number of payment methods can be offered

  • Third-party providers such as Klarna, PayPal, and Vipps MobilePay, for which a separate account/contract is required

The following sections explain which contracts you need and how to obtain them. You don't have to apply for all of them at once — but you need the right contract before you can get started with a particular method.

Credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay → you need an acquirer agreement

If you want to accept Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, you need a contract with an acquiring bank (also called an acquirer).

An acquiring bank is the financial institution that processes card payments on your behalf. When a customer pays by card, the acquirer receives the transaction, communicates with the customer's card-issuing bank, and transfers the funds to your account. Apple Pay and Google Pay also require an acquirer, as an underlying credit card must be registered to use them.

How a credit card payment works:

  • Customer → enters card details in the checkout (web shop)

  • Frisbii Pay Gateway → encrypts and forwards the transaction

  • Acquirer → authorises with the card network

  • Your bank account → funds settled in accordance with your contract

Choosing an acquirer

Before you sign a processing contract with an acquirer, consider the following:

  • Compare the rates and fees offered by competing acquirers to find the best fit.

  • Be sure your acquirer understands your business.

💡 Tip: Processing fees vary by acquirer, card type, and transaction volume. See our fees overview.

How to apply for an acquirer

Frisbii acts as your partner throughout the entire process. While approval rests with the acquirer, we support you during negotiations, guide your application.

✅ For Clearhaus, you can apply directly from the Frisbii Admin (Configurations → Admin and Billing → Acquirer Agreement Application).

What you need ("Know Your Business" documents):

  • Company certificate

  • Company name, registered address, and VAT ID

  • ID documents and proof of address for board members and beneficial owners

  • Bank details (IBAN, SWIFT/BIC) and bank account confirmation

  • A description of your business model

Ensure all documents are dated within the last 90 days.

Website checklist — acquirers review your website before approving your application:

  • Clear pricing and refund policies

  • Visible contact details and business address

  • Accessible terms & conditions and privacy policy

  • Visa and Mastercard logos on your payment page

Note
The process typically takes 2–4 weeks. Approval is managed by the acquirer and is not within Frisbii's control.

Local and alternative payment methods (iDEAL, SEPA, Twint, Bancontact, and more) → you need a PPRO contract

If you want to offer local or alternative payment methods such as iDEAL, SEPA Direct Debit, Twint, Bancontact, EPS, Przelewy24, or many others across Europe, you need a contract with the payment service provider “PPRO”.

PPRO is a payment service provider that gives you access to more than 20 local and alternative payment methods under a single contract — so you don't have to negotiate with each local provider individually. You can cover them all with one contract. Once your PPRO contract is active, you can enable the individual methods one by one in Frisbii.

Note
PPRO does not accept sole traders.

Example: setting up payment methods in Frisbii

This is an example scenario to show you how the process could look like in practice.

Test GmbH — a subscription service launching in Germany

Test GmbH is a German music streaming service. They want to launch with the following payment methods: credit cards (Visa / Mastercard), PayPal, and SEPA Direct Debit.

They would proceed as follows:

Step 1 — Identify which contracts are required

Test GmbH uses the payment method directory and decides on:

Method

Contract required

Visa / Mastercard

Acquirer

PayPal

PayPal (direct)

SEPA Direct Debit

PPRO

Three contracts are required: an acquirer agreement via an acquirer, a PayPal contract, and a PPRO contract.

Step 2 — Apply for an acquirer agreement

Test GmbH contacts Frisbii Support and decides to apply with Clearhaus. They can apply directly via the form in the Frisbii Admin.

They prepare their KYB documents (certificate of incorporation, board member IDs, IBAN details, business description) and make sure their website includes a refund policy, a contact page, and card logos.

⏱️ Approval takes 2–4 weeks.

Step 3 — Apply for PayPal

Test GmbH already has a PayPal Business account. They log in to their account at paypal.com/business and connect it to their Frisbii account.

📄 They use the PayPal setup guide for this.

Step 4 — Apply for a PPRO contract

Test GmbH contacts Frisbii Support to start the PPRO process. Once the contract with PPRO is signed, they go to Configurations → Checkout Management → Payment Methods in the Frisbii Admin and activate SEPA Direct Debit.

Step 5 — Go live

Once all three contracts are active and connected to Frisbii, Test GmbH enables the payment methods in the checkout via Configurations → Checkout Management → Checkout. Customers can now pay by credit card, PayPal, or SEPA Direct Debit.

If you have any questions about contracts with payment providers or setting up payment methods, please contact your Frisbii account manager or Frisbii Support.
